UNITED NATIONS (TURKISH JOURNAL) – By Nishat Mirza – “The pollution from the oceans affects the livelihood of thousands of coastal communities”. Says María Fernanda Espinosa, United Nations President of the General Assembly, explaining her brand new “Campaign to Beat Plastic Pollution”.

The head of UN General Assembly encouraged UN entities and 193 member states to take the necessary steps toward ending plastic pollutions in the oceans. She added, 8 to 10 million tons of plastics are currently in the oceans. If we do not act now, by 2050 there will be more plastics in the oceans than fish. Simple daily practices, such as ending the use of single-use plastics, can help alleviate this massive problem.

She said civil society such as NetGeo, Global Citizens and other organizations have partnered up with UN Environment to overcome the adversity of massive plastic pollutions in our oceans. Antigua and Barbuda, as well as Norway, also joined her campaign. She urges the United Nations and it’s entities to practice avoiding single-use plastic.
“We need a commitment from young people to say no to single-use plastic”, she says when asked about how the younger generation can step in to save our planet.
