United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the 78th session of the UN 78. He reported that in his meetings with leaders at the General Assembly, leaders criticized existing multilateral institutions and called for reform.

Guterres spoke at the General Assembly session on the “Common Agenda”.

BM 78. Stating that he held 141 bilateral meetings at the General Assembly, Guterres said that he had the opportunity to listen to the views of the leaders of the member states on this occasion.

“Without exception, all leaders emphasized the importance of multilateral solutions,” Guterres said, noting that he was encouraged by the meetings with the leaders despite this period of very serious challenges.

On the other hand, all leaders also said that the current multilateral institutions do not meet the needs, Guterres said, adding, “Leaders have called for reform one after the other.”

Guterres noted that leaders have strongly criticized the institutions of global governance as out of sync with economic and political realities.

The UN 78th Summit will be held in New York from September 19-26. The General Assembly deliberations were held.

As 189 UN members took the floor at the General Assembly, key agenda items included sustainable development goals, climate change, conflict zones and calls for reform. (AA)
