NEW YORK – Enes Kılıç – Dilek Kaya – In the bustling metropolis of New York, amidst the diverse voices contributing to its multicultural dialogue, stands Rabbi Yisroel David Weiss, a staunch activist in oppose to what he calls “Zionism” and a voice for Jewish traditionalism. Originating from the Neturei Karta group—founded in Jerusalem in 1938—Rabbi Weiss represents a faction of Judaism deeply committed to anti-Zionist principles, aligning closely with the orthodoxy tradition that traces back to the ideas once held by the majority of Jews, now controversial.

Neturei Karta, meaning “Guardians of the City” in Aramaic, represents a strain of thought within Judaism that has consistently opposed the Zionist movement from its inception, regarding it as a deviation from true Jewish teachings. Rabbi Weiss, speaking from his experience and extensive historical knowledge, is one of the many highlighting the contrast between Zionist nationalism and the millennia-old religious traditions of Judaism.

The Rabbi’s criticisms are not limited to Zionism both in the interview and in general; he also touches on broader social issues, including the treatment of Palestinians. “Jews were once embraced by Muslims during the Crusades when we faced persecution in Europe,” he recalls, drawing a stark contrast to the hostility now seen in regions affected by the Zionist policies. He also condemns the current violence and atrocities happening in Gaza & the West Bank, describing the ongoing conflict as a grievous injustice against both the Palestinian and Jewish communities who have historically coexisted peacefully in the region.

During protests and public speeches, Rabbi Weiss does not shy away from voicing his community’s opposition to the current Israeli policies, which he views as contradictory to the core values of Judaism. “We stand in solidarity with the Palestinians and all oppressed peoples,” he states, emphasizing the universal principles of justice and compassion that guide his activism.

Neturei Karta spokesperson also reminds the importance of gratitude towards the historic sanctuaries of peace for centuries of living with Muslims, especially the Ottoman Empire. In his teachings, he said, he fervently encourages the younger generation of Jews to remember and honour the role of the Empire in providing refuge and protection in turbulent times, and to pray for the Turks.

Rabbi Yisroel David Weiss commends Turkey for its nuanced approach towards addressing Israeli policies while maintaining a respectful and positive stance towards Jews and Judaism. He acknowledges the complexity in distinguishing between criticizing a state’s policies and honoring a religious tradition, and he praises Turkey’s ability to navigate this delicate balance.

Wieiss’ comments came at a time when some American media outlets were referring to Turkey’s recent efforts to mediate between Israel and Hamas.
