ISTANBUL- By Janet Ekstract – In a phone conversation on April 26, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres to keep up his efforts to forge peace in Syria.
While Erdogan urged Guterres to push for a viable political solution, he also brought up the humanitarian situation there and voiced his concerns.
The two also discussed continuing support for Palestinian refugees in the Middle East, through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). The Turkish President was reported to have expressed his ongoing support for the agency’s work and Guterres also emphasized how important that organization is and pledged his continued support for UNRWA.
Both Erdogan and Guterres agreed that a political solution is the only way to bring the Syrian conflict to an end. To assist in achieving that goal – Guterres held closed-door meetings in Sweden last week where a new proposal was put forth by Sweden.
