UNITED NATIONS – By Nishat Mirza – On his last briefing to UN Press, Staffan de Mistura mentioned, he was hoping the end of 2018 should have been the target to end the Syrian War, and establish a Syrian Lead Constitutional Committee supported by UN.
“The UN will never abandon the Syrian people, they should know that,” said Staffan de Mistura, the United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria. Mistura served for 4 and half years as a special envoy for Syria and worked diligently to serve the people of Syria.
On his last speech at the United Nations Security Council on Dec 20, 2018 Mistura laid out his effort to establish a “Syrian own Syrian Lead” Constitutional Committee.
Staffan de Mistura was appointed as the Special Envoy for Syria in 2014, his hard work lead to the adoption of UN Security Council resolution 2254 in 2015. Resolution 2254 established a timeline for a safe and secure political transition of a new Syria and a process for drafting a new constitution held under UN supervision.
On October 27th, 2017 world leaders from France, Russia, Germany, Russia and Turkey gathered in Istanbul, Turkey to discuss a UN supported process to end the war in Syria. Following this discussion, Mistura said, end of December 2018 should be a target to reach the Constitutional Committee adopted in Geneva, Switzerland. The constitution should be own and lead by Syrians only, including one woman as a co-chair of the committee since 55% of Syrian population is female.
Mistura, at his last briefing to UN press said, Syrian people have been constantly suffering, he worked tirelessly for a peaceful and secure Syria for its people. He is hopeful his successor will do the same.
