UNITED NATIONS (TURKISH JOURNAL)- The 16-year-old Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg arrived in her carbon-free yacht into New York City’ ready to tour the United Nations and get down to the business of joining participants of her global climate strike movement, Fridays for Future.
The United Nations sent the following tweet:

Thunberg was warmly greeted by General Assembly President, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, who tweeted:
‘Welcome Greta Thunberg and climate activists to the UN in New York. Your determination for climate action has shaken the world and we join you in holding leaders accountable. ”Science not Silence.”
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also praised the teen activist:
“I’m far from New York , but I’m happy to know that young people came to the UN once again to express their commitment in the fight against climate change. I encourage them to keep pushing for stronger #ClimateAction,”
The UN chief Guterres is calling on all leaders to come to New York on September 23 with as Guterres said ‘concrete, realistic plans to enhance their nationally determined contributions by 2020, in line with reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent over the next decade and to net zero emissions by 2050.
Guterres added that in order for the above to happen there must be a ‘full transformation of economies in line with sustainable development goals.’
He explained that the upcoming summit will bring governments together as well as the private sector, civil society, local authorities and other international organizations to develop ambitious solutions in six areas: a global transition to renewable energy, sustainable and resilient infrastructures and cities, sustainable agriculture and management of forests and oceans, resilience and adaptation to climate impacts, and alignment of public and private finance with a net zero economy, having high potential to reduce and limit greenhouse gas emissions and increased global action on adaptation and resilience.
These sectors include Energy Transition, Climate Finance and Carbon Pricing, Industry Transition, Nature-based solutions, Cities and Local Action, Resilience and Adaptation.
Three additional sectors include Mitigation Strategy, Youth Engagement and Public Mobilization as well as Social and Political Drivers.
Finally, the secretary-general’s goal is to mobilize communities worldwide as well as advance commitments along with plans to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
