WASHINGTON (TURKISH JOURNAL) – Top Congressional Democrat, U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced on Monday that she agreed with Republicans that President Trump’s decision to pull troops out of Syria must be reversed.
Pelosi said there is a need for a resolution to overturn the president’s “dangerous” withdrawal of troops from Northern Syria.
She added that congressional Democrats and Republicans would come up with their own sanctions bill concerning the Turkish operation in northern Syria.
President Trump tweeted: “Big sanctions on Turkey coming!”
The House Speaker explained that she held talks with senior Senator Lindsey Graham known as a hawkish Republican who disagrees with Trump on troop withdrawal from Syria.
Pelosi commented: “Our first order of business was to agree that we must have a bipartisan, bicameral, joint resolution to overturn the President’s dangerous decision in Syria immediately.”
She also added that there must be a much stronger “sanctions package” than originally proposed. As Pelosi explained: “As ..the President gave a green light to the Turks to bomb and effectively unleashed ISIS, we must have a stronger sanctions package than what the White House is suggesting.”
The proposal comes in the wake of Trump having made the decision to pull a portion of American troops out of northeastern Syria prior to the Turkish Operation Peace Spring which both Trump.and Erdogan had discussed in detail months ago.
Currently, Trump has ordered the remainder of American troops to withdraw from Syria, leaving Syrians in a precarious position and as allies fear – giving ISIS or DAESH a way to revive their power base.
