İSTANBUL- In a press conference on Thursday, after his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Turkish President Erdogan reiterated that his country stands with Ukraine to support its territorial integrity and sovereignty. As Erdogan commented: “While continuing our efforts to find a solution (to the conflict) we remain on the side of our Ukraine friends.” The Turkish leader said that his office will continue to review the results of the meetings.
A major concern remains the fighting happening in and around Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Though the workers at the plant are Ukrainian, the nuclear power facility is controlled by the Russians. To that end, Erdogan said: “We are worried. We do not want another Chernobyl.” In addition, another issue on Erdogan’s mind is the exchange of prisoners with Russia. The Turkish president added: “During our trilateral meeting, we also evaluate the possibilities of transforming the positive atmosphere created by the Istanbul Agreement into a permanent peace.” The Turkish leader expressed how the historic grain deal benefits the entire world not simply one country and that its positive effects are reverberating in the global arena.
Erdogan and Guterres believe the war will end at the negotiating table but Erdogan stressed that more international effort must be put forth if peace is to be achieved between Russia and Ukraine.
