According to the President of the World Apheresis Association (WAA) Fevzi Altuntas, Turkiye is now the “rising star of Europe with stem cell transplants reaching 5,000 annually.” Altuntas said that his country has now achieved “60-70 per million in stem cell transplants.” He spoke to Anadolu Agency at the Hematological Rare Diseases Congress in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Altuntas added that just a decade ago, Turkiye was only in the developing country category in stem cell transplantation. He said that now it’s on the level of Western nations with its research education and investments from universities, academic and the private sector.
The Turkish nation has also emerged as the prime destination for cancer treatment, Altuntas added. One reason is the participation in clinical trials which he said are crucial to continue in both cancer and stem cell treatments. He pointed out that Turkiye will have an even more robust place in the international health scene by continuing to stay abreast of innovations. What makes Turkiye unique in these areas is the variety of experienced doctors who are specialized in specific areas related to these fields who have done their research and studies abroad. Also, ongoing research at top universities in the country, offer opportunities to develop cutting edge treatments that can shorten treatment periods and be a major breakthrough for patients.
