By Janet Ekstract ISTANBUL- On Monday, Turkiye’s Deputy Foreign Minister Ahmet Yildiz will deliver an oral statement from Turkiye at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) during the hearing on the legal consequences of Israeli actions in occupied Palestinian land. Over 50 nations are presenting arguments and public hearings began last Monday in The Hague. This was after the U.N. General Assembly request for an advisory opinion on the legal consequences of policies and practices by Israel in the occupied Palestinian territory including East Jerusalem. Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Oncu Keceli said on X: “At the end of this process, legal findings regarding the oppression of Palestinians will be presented.”
Meanwhile, the ICJ announced the calendar of oral presentations in the advisory opinion that will be given on the legal consequences of Israel’s acts in the Palestinian territories. It is estimated that 52 States, including Turkiye along with the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the African Union, began making 30-minute oral presentations on February 19. It began with Palestine on the very first day and will continue through February 26, which will conclude with the Maldives in the afternoon. The U.N. court at the U.N. General Assembly’s request, will issue a nonbinding advisory opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and acts in occupied Palestine on this issue. It’s the first time such a major number of states have made written and oral statements to an advisory opinion before the court, while Israel who made written statements, has not taken part in the oral hearings. The ICJ’s advisory opinion contains the World Court’s nonbinding legal opinion on the legal liability of Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
