Turkish Journal – Şevval Erdağ – For many years, Türkiye has been contributing to the development, empowerment, and stability of Somalia militarily, politically, and economically. Türkiye serves as a cornerstone in countering geopolitical challenges, fostering ‘continent-model’ relations with the country.
The Türkiye-Somalia relationship, which strengthened after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan visited Somalia in 2011, continues to accelerate and develop.
On February 8th, the ‘Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement,’ which encompasses counterterrorism efforts and military financial cooperation, was signed between the Minister of National Defense, Yaşar Güler, and the Somali Minister of Defense, Abdulkadir Muhammed Nur, in Ankara.
Somali Defense Minister Abdulkadir Muhammed Nur described the agreement as “historic” and “the beginning of a new era in relations.”
Somali President Hasan Sheikh Mahmud stated regarding the agreement with Türkiye, “Our Turkish brothers will protect our seas for only 10 years within the framework of this agreement. After 10 years of cooperation, we will also have a navy to protect our seas.”
