Turkish Journal – Şevval Erdağ – The ceasefire resolution adopted by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for Sudan during Ramadan emphasizes an urgent call for all parties in Sudan to halt hostilities throughout Ramadan, while promoting dialogue as a pathway to resolution.
The draft resolution presented by the United Kingdom at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was approved with 14 “yes” votes and 1 “abstention” among the 15 members of the UNSC.
Anna Evstigneeva, Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia for Political Affairs, cast the abstaining vote. Evstigneeva stated, ‘We are well aware of the true intentions of Western countries.’
Evstigneeva, noting that the same countries hindered the ceasefire in Gaza, stated that refraining from calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, where more than 30,000 people have died, clearly demonstrates double standards.
Evstigneeva, stating that they did not veto the resolution because it pertains to the lives of the Sudanese people, emphasized that the Sudanese people should end the conflict.
According to the UN, over 13,000 people have lost their lives due to the conflicts in Sudan, which is undergoing the world’s largest displacement crisis. 6 million individuals have been displaced internally to other cities within the country, while 1.7 million have fled to neighboring nations. (AA)
