Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union (EU) Foreign Relations and Security Policy, said the humanitarian crisis in Gaza was caused by Israel blocking the access of humanitarian aid to the region. (AA)
EU High Representative Borrell stressed that Israel is leading the humanitarian crisis in Gaza
Borrell, at a press conference held at the United Nations (UN) building in New York, USA, frequently reported his support to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who Israel is targeting, “I expressed that I stood behind him, especially against the unjust attacks he was subjected to” he said.
Noting that the situation has deteriorated day by day in Gaza, where Israel is continuing its attacks, Borrell said, “Everything that makes up society, from museums to universities, from population records to real estate records, has been systematically destroyed. Widespread destruction is causing hundreds and thousands of people to starve, severely deficient in health care and humanitarian aid” he said.
By stressing that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is “created by human hands” we must increase “Humanitarian aid, but we must not forget that this humanitarian crisis is not caused by natural disaster, Borrell said. This is not a flood, not an earthquake, not something that comes from nature. This is a man-made humanitarian disaster” he said.
Pointing out that it is “the real problem” that Israel is preventing humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza, Borrell said that delivering aid by air or sea could not be an alternative to the road.
Borrell said, We are parachuting Israeli blockages into a place that can be reached in an hour by “Car. There is an airport. Why not use the airport? Why don’t we open the door to cars and trucks?” criticized by his words.
A request for a review of trade relations with Israel will be discussed at the beginning of the week
Borrell, who stated that the only solution for the EU in the region is a “two-state solution”, said, “The UN Security Council, a two-state solution, i call for drafting a new resolution that explicitly affirms it as a solution and defines the general principles that will make it a reality” he said.
Borrell said there are different attitudes and sensitivities among EU member states, saying, “But the point we are united with is the fact that the release of prisoners is essential for fighting to stop and seeking a political solution.
The differences in attitudes among the member states are completely reluctant to take any position, which could mean “Some members, the slightest criticism of Israel. Others are too insistent for a ceasefire” Borrell said, adding Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar, “the urgent review” of the trade agreement giving Israel many privileges in the EU market” he announced a meeting about his request early next week.
“It is not the time for Ukrainians to draw a white flag”
It is not the time for Vatican President Pope Francis to raise a white flag for “Ukrainians” he said, referring to Ukraine’s “white flag removal. They must continue to resist the occupier, and we must continue to support them in order to make them resist” he said.
Stressing that the EU is not against Russia and the Russian people, Borrell criticised “We are only against the authoritarian regime that has invaded its neighbor in violation of UN rules. (AA)
