The Top Senate Democrat Urges Israeli Course Corrections for Lasting Peace

TurkishJournal – Enes Kılıç – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called for “significant course corrections” by Israel to achieve lasting peace with the Palestinians. In a Senate speech, Democrat leader criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, stating that it “no longer fits the needs of Israel” after events on October 7.

He emphasized the importance of a negotiated two-state solution and urged talks to secure a ceasefire and hostage release. Schumer condemned Hamas for their brutal actions, with over 130 hostages still held captive in Gaza.

America’s highest-ranking Jewish politician asserted that rejecting a two-state solution would be a grave mistake and advocated for a demilitarized Palestinian state coexisting with Israel in peace, security, and prosperity. However, he acknowledged four major obstacles: Hamas, Palestinian supporters of violence, radical right-wing Israelis, and leadership challenges.

President Joe Biden is also frustrated with Mr. Netanyahu, whom he recently criticized for harming Israel more than aiding it. However, he has not explicitly called for the replacement of Israel’s leader.
