According to the Anadolu Agency, Ann Wright, a retired veteran of the US Army and former diplomat, expressed her deep disappointment with her country’s support for Israel, citing the devastating consequences of Israel’s attacks and blockade on the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in a humanitarian crisis.
Wright, who recently spoke with Anadolu Agency, resigned from her position as a US Army colonel and diplomat in 2003 due to her opposition to the Iraq War, which commenced that year.
Presently in Istanbul, Turkey, Wright emphasized that both the US and Israel bear responsibility for what she described as an ongoing “genocide” against Palestinians in Gaza. She condemned Israel’s actions as ethnic cleansing and purposeful massacres, leading to the destruction of infrastructure and the loss of countless lives.
She criticized the US for supplying weapons and financial support to Israel while failing to leverage its influence to halt the violence against Palestinians. Wright voiced her shame regarding her country’s role in supporting Israel, noting the additional casualties beyond official figures due to destroyed buildings.
Wright highlighted the discontent within military ranks regarding the US stance on Israel and Gaza, referencing individuals like Aaron Bushnell and Larry Hebert, who protested against the war.
Regarding US diplomacy, Wright labeled its unwavering support for Israel as a tragic aspect of its history. She attributed this support to a lingering guilt from World War II, suggesting it now serves to shield Israel from criticism for its actions in Gaza.
Wright underscored the necessity of ending Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza to achieve lasting peace, emphasizing that Israel’s behavior violates international law.
Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, initiated following a Hamas attack in October, has resulted in a significant loss of life, destruction of infrastructure, and widespread displacement, exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice, with an interim ruling in January urging Tel Aviv to cease genocidal acts and ensure humanitarian aid reaches civilians in Gaza.
