By Janet Ekstract -ISTANBUL On Wednesday, at a parliamentary meeting for his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) Turkish President Erdogan slammed the United Nations for what he said was its ineffectiveness in stopping Israel’s attacks on civilians in the Gaza Strip. As the Turkish leader said at a parliamentary meeting: “The spirit of the U.N is dead in Gaza.” Erdogan added: “They failed to protect even their own staff or aid workers, let alone stop genocide,” and asked “What good is the U.N., if it can’t stop genocide broadcast live in the 21st century?” Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the U.N. Security Council is meeting to discuss the Sunday night attack on a displacement peoples camp, west of Rafah where Israel had told civilians it was a ‘safe zone.’ Erdogan also criticized the Muslim world for not taking action against Israel. As Erdogan explained: “I have some words to say to the Islamic world: what are you waiting for to take a common decision?” He added: “When will the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) implement an effective, preventative policy to stop Israel’s genocide?”

Erdogan also put the blame on the U.S. for Israeli airstrikes since the U.S. is Israel’s largest supplier of weapons and other Western nations who also supply Israel with arms. As the Turkish president reiterated: “Your hands are also stained with the blood of Palestinians from this (Rafah) massacre.” He added: “European heads of state and government, you have become complicit in Israel’s vampirism due to your silence.” Erdogan also expressed: “Footage out of Rafah is unbearable,” saying that “No religion on the globe can justify this massacre.” Turkiye had already submitted documents and evidence against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on charges of genocide, some months after South Africa filed its first complaint against Israel with the ICJ. The Turkish leader insisted that the values of “democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and press, women’s and children’s rights” have dissolved because of the “death of humanity” in Gaza. Erdogan also labeled Zionism as an “unlawful perversion” that he said young people worldwide are now aware of. He also accused Israel of putting pressure on the ICJ and its judges and as a UK Guardian article stated on May 29, Israel has been hacking and allegedly threatening the other court – the International Criminal Court (ICC) to keep it from investigations into Israeli military actions in Gaza.
