CNN predicts that former President Donald Trump will win Georgia, a key battleground state. Georgia has 16 electoral votes and needs at least 270 votes to secure the presidency in 2024.
Summary of the 2020 Election: Georgia has recently emerged as a key battleground state and played an important role in President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory, turning blue for the first time in nearly three decades. Biden narrowly won the state by just 11,779 votes.
Georgia also affected the balance of power in the Senate. In 2021, two Senate runoff elections resulted in Democratic victories and the party took control of the chamber. Again in 2022, Georgia voters supported the Democratic Senate candidate, consolidating the party’s majority.
After the 2020 election, Georgia received national attention when Trump urged state officials, including Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, to ‘find’ enough votes to overturn the results. Indictments are pending in Georgia against Trump and several of his advisers for their actions during the 2020 election.
