As US authorities continue to investigate the source of multiple bomb threats targeting polling places in several states, initial findings suggest that some of the threats may have originated from Russian email domains. The FBI has not yet publicly confirmed any direct links to Russia and the investigation is ongoing.
Jen Easterly, head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told reporters, ‘The FBI has indicated that these threats came from .ru domains, but that does not necessarily mean they are Russian. This issue is still under investigation.’
Easterly added that if the threats are confirmed to be linked to a foreign adversary, including Russia, the government will carefully consider its response.
Working closely with local law enforcement, the FBI is coordinating with authorities in the four states (Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona and Georgia) that received the threats. Several polling stations have been evacuated as a precaution. Although some threats were initially associated with Russian email domains, the FBI has assessed that these are not reliable.
