Donald Trump is one step closer to a historic comeback by declaring victory over Kamala Harris in the US presidential race. Trump, who needs just one more state to secure the 270 electoral votes needed, told supporters in Florida that it would usher in a ‘new golden age for America’. CBS projections show Trump leading in critical states such as Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina.
Another boost is that Republicans are expected to win control of the Senate, which would ease Trump’s legislative path, including his immigration and tax reform plans. Trump, now 78, would be the first former president to recapture the White House in more than 130 years.
Kamala Harris, who wants to make history as the first woman president, has not yet made a statement. The first CBS exit polls show Harris struggling to find support among women and minority voters compared to previous Democratic performances.
Election day saw a high turnout, with millions of voters casting ballots early. Both parties continue to prepare for potential legal challenges as votes are finalised.
