Luigi Mangione, 26 years old, has been accused of murdering Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, who was shot and killed last week in Manhattan. Mangione was apprehended on Monday at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after a diner recognized him and notified the authorities.
An Ivy League alumnus hailing from a well-known family in Maryland, Mangione was found in possession of a firearm and a document that showed his animosity toward corporate America, according to police reports. Thompson, 50, was killed outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel where an investor meeting was taking place. Investigators suspect that the murder was planned in advance.
Initially, Mangione faced charges in Pennsylvania for possessing a firearm, but has since been charged in New York with murder and related crimes. His arrest came after a thorough manhunt that employed surveillance technologies, drones, and police dogs.
Authorities were reportedly taken aback by his capture, as he had not been on their radar as a suspect previously. Court documents disclosed that Mangione had a fake identification, a “ghost gun,” $10,000 in cash, and notes indicating a motive tied to practices within the insurance industry.
His family expressed astonishment and devastation over his arrest, extending condolences to Thompson’s family. Mangione, a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, had worked in data engineering and had a brief residence in a surfing community in Hawaii.
He now faces the possibility of extradition to New York to face trial.
